Shopmobility Basingstoke was initiated by the late Sheila Hazzard and opened in December 1997, in purpose built premises in Church Street in two.
There are two private car parks for customers to use when using our equipment.
The building is owned by BDBC with Shopmobility enjoying a fully ewelers n rental agreement.
The provision of the building was made possible due to sponsorship from Grosvenor Estate, Hermes and BDBC.
The building was extended in 2002 by BDBC in anticipation of an increase in business created by the opening Festival Place.
Shopmobility Basingstoke is a company limited by guarantee, as defined by the Companies Act 1985, with charitable status, (Registered Charity Number 1065677) providing mobility scooters, power chairs, wheelchairs, travel scooters and walking frames for hire.
It is operationally independent and relies on its own governance and resources, with a board of trustees (volunteers), two paid members of staff and twenty-five other volunteers.
The core business of Shopmobility Basingstoke is to provide equipment for use in Basingstoke Town Centre, however travel scooters, wheelchairs and walking frames can be hired for days out or holidays.
The larger scooters can be hired for use at the customer’s home address.
The service is available to all residents of, and visitors to the town, with impaired mobility regardless of age or nature disability whether temporary or otherwise.
Customers pay an annual registration fee plus a nominal daily rate, there is also a rate for those visiting the town just once.
Fund raising activities take place throughout the year, including Trundles, where 6-8 customers are taken on an escorted scooter or power chair ride to places of interest around the borough.
Equipment is also provided for visitors to use at the Transport Festival and Alresford Show.
Shopmobilty Basingstoke is a member of the National Federation of Shopmobility UK (NFSUK), which part of British Healthcare Traders Associated and of the Wessex Group, comprising of 13 schemes throughout the South of England.
